How Much Shade Does an Awning Actually Provide? What to Consider Before Choosing One

An awning can completely change how comfortable a patio, deck, window, or outdoor seating area feels, but simply adding an awning does not guarantee that you will get the amount of shade you expect.

The effectiveness of an awning depends on much more than its width. The direction your space faces, the time of day you want shade, the projection of the awning, the height at which it is installed, and even the season can all influence where that shade actually falls.

This is especially important in the Pacific Northwest, where homeowners may want protection from strong summer sun without permanently sacrificing the natural light they appreciate during cooler, cloudier months.

Before choosing an awning, it helps to understand how shade actually works and which factors will make the biggest difference for your particular space.

What About Glare Through Windows?
